Cataphora’s Ten Year Anniversary
Posted January 2012
January 2012 marks Cataphora’s ten-year anniversary. This is a huge accomplishment for any start-up, especially a bootstrapped one, and it is certainly worth taking a moment to reflect upon and celebrate what we’ve done over the course of the company’s life.
Let’s take a brief look at some of Cataphora’s milestones to date:
- Company founded, January 2002.
- First patent filed, 2002. So far, we’ve been awarded five patents with over 384 claims, with more pending.
- C-Evidence, our flagship product for the legal market, debuted in 2003.
- Cataphora CEO Elizabeth Charnock was named one of the 50 People Who Will Change How We Work and Live Over the Next 10 Years by Fast Company in 2006.
- We processed our 100,000,000th document, 2006.
- C-Evidence was recognized as one of the trendsetting products of 2007 by KMWorld.
- Cataphora CEO Elizabeth Charnock authored a book, E-Habits: What You Must Do to Optimize Your Professional Digital Presence, which was published by McGraw Hill in August 2010.
- We released Digital Mirror, our consumer application, in August 2010 to give users a taste of what Cataphora’s analytics can do.
- We landed a spot on the coveted front page of the New York Times in March 2011. While we were especially excited about this achievement, we’ve also been featured in other high profile publications throughout the years including: CNN, the Economist, Forbes, Business Week, the Wall Street Journal, NPR and the Der Spiegel, to name a few.
- We successfully divested our Legal Business Unit in May 2011 to Ernst & Young, allowing us to better focus on strategic markets including: enterprise, government, and advertising.
- We opened an engineering office in Ann Arbor in October 2011.
Thank you to all of our employees, customers, advisors, business partners, and company friends who contributed in some way to Cataphora’s success in the first ten years of the company’s development. We’re very proud of our accomplishments to date and look forward to the possibilities of the next decade!
Cataphora is Opening an Office in Ann Arbor, Michigan
Updated on August 29, 2011
We are opening an office in Ann Arbor, Michigan this October! Our new office in Ann Arbor will be a home for software engineering and quality assurance efforts, and will function as yet another way to continue building our strong relationship with the University of Michigan community. It will be located at Liberty and Division Street, just a short walking distance to the University of Michigan campus. A large portion of existing Cataphorans, including CEO Elizabeth Charnock, went to the University of Michigan. We’re continually impressed with the caliber of students at the University; we look forward to meeting and recruiting students—specifically those seeking a fast paced and challenging work environment where you have the opportunity to take on a lot of responsibility—to join the Cataphora team in the upcoming months! As of now, we plan to primarily recruit from the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) department within the College of Engineering and the School of Information. If you’re interested in learning more about job opportunities at Cataphora and you’re living in the Ann Arbor area, please visit our Employment page or contact us at work@cataphora.com.
Be sure to check back in the next couple of months on both the What’s New page as well as the Cataphora blog for additional updates on the status of the Ann Arbor office.
The University of Michigan Publishes a Case Study on Cataphora
Posted July 12, 2011
The University of Michigan’s Center for Entrepreneurship recently published a case study about Cataphora titled, “A Conscious Decision to Bootstrap.” The case study examines the first five years of the company’s development and focuses on Cataphora’s bootstrapped financial structure during this time period. The case study is written at a critical juncture: a point when the company was deciding whether or not to take outside funding. This case study is intended to provide students with an understanding of the nature of the tradeoffs associated with bootstrapping and introduce them to the possibility of taking this less-well traveled entrepreneurial route.
Thanks to Moses Lee, Academic Program Manager and Lecturer at the Center for Entrepreneurship, and Amy Goldstein, Academic Student Services Assistant, for all their hard work to create this case study. It was a pleasure collaborating with the University of Michigan and we’re excited to share our experiences with students, entrepreneurs and educators both within the Michigan community and beyond!
The case study is now available for immediate download here:

The New Cataphora Inc. Warrants a Fresh Website and Logo
Posted June 16, 2011
Welcome to the new Cataphora Inc.! In May 2011, Cataphora Inc. divested its legal business unit to Ernst & Young. In order to commemorate this new stage in the company’s development and our focus on solutions for customers in key non-legal markets, we launched a completely new website – both in terms of design and content – and also updated the Cataphora logo.
Our new website design aims to be sleek, sophisticated and simple, and showcases a wide array of use cases for our core technology. The new Cataphora logo, an updated and modern variant of our previous logo, deliberately references the pre-divestiture Cataphora, evoking our history and experience. Looking forward, we’re prepared, more than ever, to tackle the challenges associated with Big Data for Fortune 1000 enterprises and government. Our new website and logo reflect our excitement about Cataphora’s future as a post-divestiture entity as we continue to offer solutions for customers to understand, analyze and extract meaningful insights from digital data.
Thanks to all at Cataphora who were involved in this project. We’ve received a lot of positive feedback about the new website. We hope you agree! Please feel free to share your thoughts: marketing@cataphora.com or via Twitter @Cataphora.
Cataphora Headquarters Move to Menlo Park
Posted June 15, 2011

After spending over nine years in Redwood City, CA, we recently relocated our headquarters to Menlo Park, CA, a short drive from our previous offices. We found a spectacular new space that better suits our needs going forward, both in terms of practicality and design aesthetic. Our new building has two levels and was designed with a mixture of offices and small-group work areas. The lower level is primarily composed of offices and work spaces, together with a lounge, kitchen and dining area, while the second floor is an open mezzanine with offices, workstations and informal meeting areas around the perimeter. Take a look at the photos to get a feel for the building —a very practical space that also manages to be fun, unconventional and structurally interesting!
Our new offices are located at:
3425 Edison Way
Menlo Park, CA 94025
e-G8 Forum 2011
Updated May 26, 2011
Cataphora CEO Elizabeth Charnock attended the invitation-only e-G8 Forum in Paris in late May. Convened by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, this was a prelude to the annual G8 summit, which was held this year in France. The Forum brought together technology leaders from around the world to contribute ideas about the role of the Internet in society and the economy. Their conclusions were submitted to the G8 heads of government who met over the two days following the Forum. This was the first time that information technology was formally addressed at the G8 Summit, showcasing how important the Internet and fast-evolving technology have become in terms of shaping, sustaining and accelerating global growth.
